I’m actually really proud of these. I was inspired by other bloggers’ attempts at bagel-making, but I used a much simpler recipe that I found on bagelrecipes.net. I didn’t want to take on too much my first time bagel-making. So I cut the recipe down a little and decided to make mini-bagels instead of monsters. (I do love a monster bagel though. How I miss Bagel Bob’s in NYC; Bagel Bob’s is the best way to OD on tofu cream cheese, and dirt-cheap bagels on Mondays can’t be beat.)

This recipe is the easiest one I could find and it was still pretty involved. It took a couple of hours all together and had several steps. I only suffered one minor burn (a good day for me) and one flour spill (on my foot).

Here are the little buggers, rising:

And the finished product….

I made four different kinds: plain wheat, cinnamon, oat, and what I’m dubbing Italian because I baked into it dried tomato and garlic.

I already ate one of the wheat ones with tofu cream cheese and cinnamon, and I have to say they turned out pretty well. They’re no Bagel Bob’s or anything, but they’re a thousand times better than grocery store bagels, and I think they’ll tide me over until I’m back in New York. Maybe next time I’ll even try making the bigger ones. We’ll see…
